Certainly one of the your primary goals in your bed and breakfast marketing plan is to make a lasting impression so that guests return again or recommend your bed and breakfast to others. Your serve the best food. You painstakingly attend to every detail in your guests' rooms. Now there's a unique and effective way to reinforce the memory of that great stay at your bed and breakfast and help your guests remember your inn's name as well. You simply adapt a must have item already on your list of bed and breakfast supplies.

You've probably read about how your sense of smell is the sense that has the strongest memory recall. It's known as the Proust Effect. Use your favorite search engine and do a search using the terms
"smell memory recall" or "Proust Effect". Don't use the quotes when you actually type the words into the search box. You will soon see evidence for yourself that your sense of smell is the most powerful sense for imprinting memories on the brain and for triggering memories.

My suggestion is simple. You capitalize on the power of the sense of smell to imprint and evoke memories to effectively market your bed and breakfast. This is how you do it:

  • Select one or more of my natural soaps that best represents the name or theme of your bed and breakfast in terms of appearance and fragrance. If you can, choose a common fragrance. I'll explain why later. Customize the packaging to include your logo, a picture of your bed and breakfast, whatever is distinctive and memorable. If you don't see a soap that suites your needs perfectly, I can develop one for you. I can take an existing soap and change the coloration if you want. The only thing that I absolutely will not do is compromise quality or use an ingredient that's not 100% pure and natural.
     
    Assume that your Bed and Breakfast's name is "The Apple Inn Bed and Breakfast" (yes, I picked and easy one) and consider how this approach would work. You might use my Apple Blossom Soap. Or you could use my Apple Pie Soap. The label - "Apple Inn Handmade Natural Soap". That's one more reinforcement for remembering your bed and breakfast's name.
  • Use a linen spray with that fragrance in the room. Memory association of the bed and breakfast and the fragrance will begin the minute your guests enter the room. Many of my soaps already have a companion linen spray or I can develop a new linen spray.
  • Use the usual smaller bars of natural soap in the rooms. Now having stayed in bed and breakfasts myself and no stranger to traveling, your bath or shower is important. You look forward to it. The soap? I remember a lot of times it was some kind of French Milk Soap. It was OK, but not memorable. Not distinctive. Not unique. Nothing to tie the soap to the bed and breakfast.
     
    We want to associate the appearance and fragrance of the soap with the bed and breakfast.

    The gifts shown above are inexpensive but worth a fortune in terms of imprinting your bed and breakfast's name on your guests memory. Gifts add the ultimate finishing touch to your guests' memorable stay.
    Surprise your guests at checkout with a small gift basket or box with a bar of the same natural soap they were using during their stay and possibly a soap dish. You want it to be a surprise so you don't advertise the fact that guest get a gift at checkout. Everyone enjoys getting a surprise gift. Everybody enjoys getting something for free even if they drove up in a Rolls Royce. It's just human nature. And since the gift is a bar of soap they're probably going to use it. Young or old. Rich and not so rich. Everyone uses soap and they've already experienced this soap. A natural soap bar lasts for at least 30 days. Every time they use the soap its appearance and fragrance reinforces your bed and breakfast's name and strengthens the memory of their stay. The reason you include a soap dish is because the soap will last up to 50% longer using our soap dishes.

The reasoning for the nine to 32 months timing was that people tend to take their vacations at the same time of the year. I am attempting to catch them at a time when they may be planning their next vacation.

  • It works for your guests because they have a great experience at your bed and breakfast and may be introduced to the incredible, healthy benefits of handmade natural soap.

You've heard your guests talking to other guests around breakfast or dinner table about inns they have stayed at in the past. They remember a special food.
